Lapinlahti 360
Proposal, 2024. Pro-bono project architect consulting work for Lapinlahti Foundation in 2024, continuing on ideas of the 360-competition proposal originally commissioned by Y-foundation in 2019. Helsinki.
The Lapinlahti 360 project proposes a careful restoration of the +180 year old psychiatric hospital buildings and park. The care of the premises is carried out incrementally over a period of 7 years. The idea is, as should be in all care work, not rushing to diagnose, not defaulting to standard practice, and not demanding any part to perform at a degree that’s radically different from what it is originally meant to. To listen. To try to understand.
This is how buildings should be restored. Furthermore, in the specific case of Lapinlahti, the process allows for the continual use of the park and buildings including the continuity of the current award-winning low threshold mental health care work.
While maintaining the caring of minds, the building itself is an act of care. A 360° feedback loop, hopefully.
